Many of us ladies like to flaunt our braids, weaves and a lot other protective hairstyles every now and again right? I know I do. But how do we keep our hair healthy under those styles? Let’s talk about managing our hair under protective hairstyles.
Moisturize your hair
I can never stress the importance of feeding your hair with moisture. You don’t have to do this everyday. Once every second or third day is still fine. Because when your hair is dried up, it is at a greater risk of breaking. Let alone damage. Now as much as you feel the need to moisturise your weave, do the same with your hair underneath.
Wash your hair
There’s nothing wrong with putting a wig on every day. Just make sure you do not forget that you have hair under that wig. Wash it! I for one never used to like washing my hair until I started enjoying trying out new products. If that’s what it take for you to wash your hair, then why not?
Undo that protective style
Well, well. I couldn’t think of a better heading. But what I am trying to say is: 4 weeks is the longest you can stay with your protective hairstyle. Anything longer than that is just being stubborn. Your hair needs to breathe, even just a day or two.
Wrap a doek when you sleep
Some call it a scarf. Just wrap it around your head before going to bed. One may ask but why? When you’re asleep you toss and turn. That on it’s own disturbs your hair. A scarf/doek will keep your hair intact. In that way allowing it to grow well.
Ever noticed that after that 2 to 3 weeks of having had your protective hairstyle you find that your hair has knots and some dirt on? Thats because we neglect our hair when we have protective styles on. That is not good for hair growth and health in general.
